Putin Warns Europe of Gas Shortage Amid Ukraine Crisis

(FINNBAY-ANSA) – Rome, 10 April 2014. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday warned Europe it might face a gas shortage because of payment delays by Ukraine, mired in a bitter territorial dispute with Moscow.

Pipelines deliver Russian gas via Ukraine to several EU countries and there are fears Putin may shut the taps as he has in the past.

Armed pro-Russian separatists are holed up in official buildings in the eastern Ukraine cities of Donetsk and Luhansk. Russian troops are massed on Ukraine’s borders amid rising tensions after Moscow’s recent annexation of the ethnically Russian Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, contested by the West as illegal.
