What is the age limit for clubbing in Finland?

In comparison to America or Japan, where the age limit for buying and drinking alcoholic beverages is 21, Finland seems to be heaven as it has the old-fashioned “K18”. However, the age limits that are put in place by the private bar owners are relatively high in Finland and may bring some difficulties along the way of finding a perfect place for you and your friends to party.

Like mentioned above, the legal age for drinking alcoholic beverages in a bar or a nightclub is 18. This also includes buying mild alcoholic beverages in shops – to buy a hard liquor on the other hand, the age limit is 20. In practice, most of the bars and clubs set their age limit to above 20, 22 and in some cases to even 24!

The question is how to find a nice place to party if you are aged below some bar’s random age limits.

1. Search for the right place

The first “rule” of course is to go online (uhm.. Finnbay’s nightlife directory would be a great place to start) and search for possible options to go. Nothing is more annoying than taking hours to get ready and going to a place to find out that you look too young to get in to a certain bar. It is also advisable to check the prices before making plans if you want to stay in budget.

2. Party during the week

Well this is not for everybody but it is true that some clubs lift their age limit for Fridays and Saturdays. If you are able and willing to go with a nice group of friends, nothing can stop you!

3. Choose the right group

This is a bit shady area… If you are 18, technically, it is not illegal for you to get into any places but some places can reject you. You may be let in:

– If you are with an older, mature looking adults.

– If the doormen is having a good night

– If you act like a tourist who needs to spend some money!

4. Dress up right

Highlighting your best features is great and [encouraged] but too much is just too much and may be the only reason to be bounced!

It is likely that every one of us is going to find a place that fits to their preferences. The national age limit for drinking and partying is “18”, but the common trend is to separate younger groups from many other venues. If you are still waiting for your party haven, start searching or you can always create one by asking some friends to come over and have a nice night in.

I found the 3rd point to be the most effective solution in my case. Being a 24 year old but looking very young for Finns always gets me into trouble when partying in Helsinki :(
