For those who wish to seek refuge from the humming metropolises, there could hardly be a better place than Oulu City. The city was officially founded in the year 1605 and today it has become the center of excellence for technological enterprises. However, Oulu is not a high-tech city largely. On the contrary, it is a tranquil, unobtrusive yet acceptably modern city with mélange of historical and contemporary architecture.
For me, Oulu is a unique city in countless aspects. It is a must see city, I reckon. It has so many things that perhaps no other part of the world has to offer. Imagine almost 24 hours long days and in winters almost 24 hours of night time, the Northern Lights, a beautiful beach, which is so calm that a surfer would perhaps ask for travel expenses reimbursement.
On a serious note, Oulu has an assortment of activities for visitors. It offers truly picturesque nature regardless of the weather, winter sports, summer sports, concerts, smallish yet well organized dance parties, shopping malls, lakes, rivers, rapids, walking tracks, social events, summer stalls and the list goes on.
There is pretty decent nightlife in Oulu for the fact that it is a city with two universities that have attracted a large number of international students. There are pubs, bars and nightclubs – almost all of them provide enjoyable milieu. There is a whisky bar, which is known for its vast and classy collection of whiskies. But the good news is that they also serve beer. I will deal with each specific of these activities in detail from time to time in this column, so be better subscribe here. :)
Those who are interested in cultural heritage would not be disheartened if they were to visit Oulu. The city has seven cultural venues including the City Theatre, Art Museum, Oulu Symphony and Science Center Tietomaa. In particular, Science Center Tietomma offers predefined themes in science and adventure.
Are you into adventurism?
For adventurers, there ample opportunities such as hunting and fishing. Of course, one needs a license and hunting can be done only during a specified period of the year. However, fishing is practically doable all around the year. Those keen on outdoor activities can have their own choice because the “menu” includes swimming, ice swimming, cycling, guided exercises, jogging, canoeing camping, golf and cruises.
Social events generally take place throughout the year but as spring approaches, the events become more frequent. Although we are approaching April already, still Oulu has a handful to offer in the running month and for the rest of summer. For instance, the 22nd Oulu Music Festival is still on, there is an Ice Fishing Marathon from March 23 to March 25, 2013. And each month brings with it an exciting event that can fascinate most of the people.
